Bélgica, el país de la cerveza

Belgium, the country of beer

The origin of Belgian beer dates back to the time of the Crusades in the 12th century, before Belgium was an independent country, so it is no surprise that Belgian beers are world-renowned and award-winning.

Today, there are more than a thousand Belgian beer brands that produce beers of hundreds of different styles and flavors. Furthermore, when we talk about beer styles, we cannot overlook abbey beer and Trappist beer, two styles of beer that are often confused. But don't worry, we're going to tell you the difference!

Abbey beers are brewed in commercial breweries and use the name and recipe of both abandoned and operating abbeys. Tripel Karmeliet and Grimbergen are examples of abbey beer.

However, Trappist beers are those that are brewed in a Trappist abbey and whose process is carried out or supervised by Trappist monks. Furthermore, Trappist beer is not just a beer style; it is also a designation of origin that guarantees that beers with this seal have been brewed under the license of an abbey. In Belgium, there are six abbeys that have the "Authentic Trappist Product" seal, including Chimay and Rochefort.

Another original Belgian style is lambic beer, known for its strong acidic flavor, which is brewed using wild yeasts. Some examples are the wide variety of beers produced by the Lindemans brewery.

But the vast variety of unique beer styles is not the only thing that makes Belgian beer unique. The vast majority of Belgian beers have a specific glass to enjoy that beer to the fullest. There are hundreds of glasses and goblets with different designs whose purpose is to enhance the taste and aroma of the beer.

At Beer Republic, we have a great diversity of Belgian beers, now also in 75cl format, and a section of glasses and goblets to be able to enjoy your favorite beer.
