Andechs is one of the last truly monastic breweries in the world, managed by an active religious order and completely independent of large corporations. Benedictine monks of the Abbey of St. Boniface, Munich, and the monastery of Andechs, represent a unique and deeply spiritual brewing tradition. In this place, beer is not only made: it matures until it becomes a real pleasure for body and soul.
Andechs’ brewing tradition dates back to 1128, when they began to attend the pilgrims who went up to the so-called “Holy Mountain.” Since 1455, the Benedictines have received those who arrive in Andechs with hospitality and beer. Today, the monastery’s brewery remains committed to sustainable growth and preserving its monastic identity.
All beers are made exclusively in the monastery of Andechs, using a traditional process of multiple maceration. They have been ambassadors of Bavarian hospitality for over 550 years. Moreover, the proceeds from the sale of these beers are used to finance social works, such as helping homeless people in Munich — all without recourse to ecclesiastical tax funds.
Each bottle of Andechs contains centuries of tradition, Benedictine hospitality and social commitment. It is not just a beer: it is the living legacy of a monastery that it elaborates with purpose.
