Abbey Beers

Although the Abbey style is not really considered a style per se, we can say that Abbey beers are those beers whose recipe, origin, and/or production come from an Abbey, thus encompassing different styles and brewing processes with a clear monastic origin. Therefore, it can be interpreted that when we say "Abbey beer," we are referring to a historical origin rather than a geographical one, and not to a level of quality.

Traditionally, these beers originate from Central Europe, especially Belgium, the Netherlands, Germany, and to a lesser extent, France. Regardless of the styles, they can be bottle-conditioned beers, which are highly valued among fans.

There is a major exception within Abbey beers: Trappist beers. Despite being brewed within Abbeys, they are not known as Abbey beers but rather as Trappist beers.
