Birra y Rock'n'Roll

Beer and Rock'n'Roll

Traditionally, beer has been associated with leisure, free time, and, of course, partying. The association with music is almost the same, so it was only a matter of time before beer and music joined hands. In any self-respecting concert, the prevailing drink is and has always been beer; what's more, a modern music concert is inconceivable without beer, as it is consumed by the audience and sometimes by the musicians themselves. Thus, beer has become part of the ritual of experiencing live music, in addition to generating significant revenue. It is not surprising that a shrewd manager saw an opportunity to grow their band's popularity and income. From major international bands and, more recently, some local bands, many have their own beer, some more successful than others and with qualities to suit all tastes.

But it is the great Rock and Heavy Metal bands that are at the forefront of the most recognized musical beers. We are reminded of one of the first bands with their own beer, a 50cl black canned pilsner with silver AC/DC lettering; a lot has happened since the Germans at Karlsberg Brauerei brought it to market (not to be confused with Carlsberg from Denmark).

Motörhead, in partnership with Camerons Brewery, produces Röad Crew beer in the north of England. The beer takes its name from the song "We are the Röad Crew," written by Lemmy in the restrooms of a recording studio in North London.

Iron Maiden also did the same, but this time with the UK-based Robinson’s brewery, releasing the Trooper beer to the market. Robinson’s has developed an extensive range of beers linked to the work and legacy of Iron Maiden, delighting fans of the group and its iconography, with Eddie at the forefront. The culmination of this is the Trooper Collection Mix, a box containing 2 bottles of each of the different beers they have crafted, for a total of 12, and featuring a realistic Flight Case-style box—but don't be fooled, it is a cardboard box that imitates the transport cases used at concerts.

Metallica could not be left out; considered by many to be the best heavy metal band in the world, they launched Enter Night, an artisanal pilsner produced by Stone Brewing in San Diego (California). To do this, they created a 50/50 joint venture between the band and the brewery called Arrogant Consortia, and in January 2019, Enter Night hit the market, coinciding with the start of the band's European tour.

On the local scene, one of the pioneering breweries was Cervesa Guineu with Dr. Calypso Gluten Free, the special tribute from the Súria brewery to the Ska-Reggae-Soul group from Barcelona, which has over 25 years of music behind it.
