La historia de amor detrás de la cerveza Orval

The love story behind Orval beer

Every beer has a story, and some, like the Orval, hold a true love story. Beyond its exquisite taste and traditional brewing method, this beer carries with it a legend that has endured through the centuries.

At Beer Republic, we want to share this romantic story with you. Because there are many love stories, but the best one is your love for beer ;).

Matilda of Tuscany and the lost ring

Legend has it that Countess Matilda of Tuscany, also known as Matilda of Canossa, was a woman of great power and influence in the Middle Ages. Owner of vast territories in northern Italy and a protector of the Papacy, she excelled in both politics and the military sphere. It is said that she built or restored more than a hundred churches, monasteries, and hospices, leaving an indelible mark on history.

One day, while walking through a beautiful valley, Matilda lost her wedding ring in a spring. Disconsolate, she prayed to recover it and, as if fate had answered her plea, a trout emerged from the water with the ring in its mouth. Moved by what she considered a miracle, she exclaimed: "This is truly a golden valley!" ("Val d’Or" in French), giving rise to the name of the abbey and, subsequently, the Orval beer. In gratitude, she ordered a monastery to be built on that very spot, where centuries later this iconic Trappist beer would be brewed.

Orval, a beer with history and prestige

Today, Orval beer remains one of the most valued in the craft beer world. It is brewed at the Notre-Dame d’Orval Abbey, located in Belgium, a place with centuries of brewing tradition. Its production follows strict Trappist principles: it is produced within the abbey, the monks participate actively in its brewing, and its profits are destined for charitable works. Furthermore, the iconic label of the trout with the ring continues to remind us of the story of love and gratitude that gave rise to it.

This Trappist jewel stands out for its characteristic copper-blonde color, its creamy foam, and its aromatic complexity. It is brewed with water extracted from Matilda's Well, the same spring where Matilda lost her ring. Its balanced flavor and subtle bitterness make it a unique experience for craft beer lovers.
