What is celebrated on IPA Day

IPA Day is an international holiday dedicated to celebrating the India Pale Ale (IPA) beer style, one of the most influential, popular, and versatile in the craft world.

The goal of this day is clear: to unite the global beer community around a style that has revolutionized the way we understand and enjoy beer. It arose to give visibility to craft beers, to those who brew them, and to those who enjoy them, beyond the trends or fads of the moment. It creates a space for celebration, reflection, and connection.

When is IPA Day celebrated

The first Thursday of August. That is the date marked on the global beer calendar to pay homage to the IPA style. It falls on a different day each year. This year, IPA Day is celebrated on Thursday, August 7, 2025.

Who created IPA Day and why

The creator of IPA Day was Ashley Routson, known as The Beer Wench, one of the first beer influencers in the United States. Together with her digital collaborator Ryan Ross, they proposed a global day in 2011 to raise awareness of this style, connect breweries, bars, shops, and fans, and pay tribute to the most iconic beer of the craft movement.

The enthusiasm generated was such that the initiative spread rapidly from the United States to the whole world. Since then, every first Thursday of August, IPA Day unites fans of the style.

What is an IPA

IPA stands for India Pale Ale, a British beer style that developed in the late 18th century as a variation of the pale ales already being brewed in England. Although it has been popularly said that it emerged to withstand long voyages to colonial India, the truth is that there is no proof that it was an "invention" as such, nor that a single brewer—like George Hodgson—created it from scratch.

The reality is that certain hoppier and drier pale ales began gaining popularity among the British upper classes residing in India. Over time, these beers exported to India began to be popularly known as India Pale Ale. A type of beer with an aromatic, bitter, and fresh profile, without needing to be particularly high in alcohol for preservation.

Nowadays, IPAs are synonymous with brewing creativity: a style that has given rise to countless variants (from Hazys to Black IPAs) and which we celebrate every year for its global impact.

What types of IPA exist

IPAs have evolved enormously since their origin. Today there are dozens of variants that explore new profiles, aromas, and textures. These are some of the most popular:

  • American IPA: more citrusy, resinous, and aromatic, with the classic punch of American hops.
  • New England IPA (NEIPA): hazy, silky texture, fruity profile, and moderate bitterness.
  • West Coast IPA: dry, clear, resinous, with high bitterness and a clean finish.
  • Double IPA: more alcohol, more hops, more of everything.
  • Session IPA: lower in alcohol, but very aromatic and drinkable.
  • Belgian IPA: blends hoppy notes with spicy Belgian yeasts.
  • Red IPA: with more toasted malts, reddish color, and a balance between sweetness and bitterness.
  • Cold IPA: an IPA fermented at lower temperatures (like a lager), which provides greater crispness and freshness.

How to celebrate IPA Day

Everyone celebrates it in their own way, but always with a good IPA in hand. Breweries and bars around the world launch special editions, organize tastings, collaborations, promotions, and themed events.
