Sierra Nevada Brewing Co. is, today, one of the quintessential North American craft breweries.
Below, we will explain its history in a little more depth.
History
The popularity and history of Sierra Nevada Brewing Co. are closely linked to craft production in the United States of America.
It could be said that this period or revolution began under Jimmy Carter's policies in 1978, the year his administration legalized homebrewing, leading to the birth of small independent breweries and resulting in a fervent surge in homemade beer production.
Keep in mind that at that time there were only about 40 breweries across the entire country, and the beer market was dominated by industrial beers like Budweiser, Miller, and Coors.
The story of Sierra Nevada Brewing Co. begins in the garage of its founder, Ken Grossman, where he and a friend, Paul Camusi, started brewing beer with homemade equipment and a small selection of ingredients in 1979.
After experimenting with different beer styles, ingredients, and recipes, they soon realized they had a knack for brewing high-quality beer, so the next step was to open their own brewery in 1980.
Fast forward to 1980, Chico, California. Sierra Nevada opens its doors and, despite its small size, soon earns the trust of its customers with an American-style Pale Ale, featuring a fruity yet bitter taste, and with it, a fame they have never lost. For this reason, this APA became Sierra Nevada's flagship.
But it wasn't until 1989 that they were able to start distributing their beer nationally, as they had recently acquired a new space with greater production capacity; around the year 2000, Sierra Nevada Brewing Co. became one of the largest independent breweries in the United States.

Over these last few years, Sierra Nevada has continued to expand its line of beers, launching several seasonal beers and various limited-edition beers that have been very well received by beer lovers. In addition, the brewery has begun to brew beers with organic ingredients and has developed a line of gluten-free beers to meet the needs of consumers with food intolerances.
PHILOSOPHY
Pioneers in the use of fresh, whole-cone hops instead of dried hops, they are able to obtain a fresher, more complex flavor in their beers and superior quality. This has led them to be one of the first breweries to use organic hops in their production, and they have developed their own hop farm to ensure a supply of fresh, locally sourced, high-quality hops for their beers.
In addition to their focus on brewing high-quality beers, Sierra Nevada Brewing Co. also stands out for its commitment to sustainability, being one of the first breweries to implement sustainable practices during the production and brewing process, such as the use of renewable energy and the recovery of water and waste. In 2010, it was recognized as one of the most sustainable breweries in the world by "BeerAdvocate" magazine.
Sierra Nevada Brewing Co. has also stood out for its support of the local community. Through its corporate social responsibility program, it has donated thousands of dollars to charitable organizations and has collaborated with local organizations to promote sustainable development and environmental conservation.
PRODUCTS
Sierra Nevada's production has grown a lot since the launch of its first American Pale Ale.
With the years, experience, and the desire to continue innovating, it currently has various product families: the Core range, with beers that are always in production, like their famous Pale Ale, which launched them to fame, or the Torpedo beer; the Little Things family, which features different more modern beer styles, such as Hazy IPAs; the Seasonal family with seasonal beers; the High Altitude family, with stronger beers; and finally the Specialty family, which are special beers.
CLASSICS
With over 40 years behind them, Sierra Nevada has been able to create a great variety of beers, but if one beer defines its history, it is the American-style Pale Ale that made them successful in 1980. A little later came another beer that would mark their history at the brewery: Torpedo.
- Pale Ale
5.6% ABV American Pale Ale. Brewed with Caramel and Two-Row Pale malts and Cascade hops, it provides a bold hop flavor and a smooth malt flavor with intense aromas of citrus and pine, which converge in a perfect balance with the subtle sweetness of the caramelized malt.

- Torpedo
7.2% ABV "Extra" IPA. Brewed with Caramel and Two-Row Pale malts and Citra, Crystal, and Magnum hops, it offers a direct hop punch thanks to the dry-hopping it has undergone. With notes of citrus, tropical fruits, and pine, it makes for an explosive beer.
