Beers from Catalonia

In 2005, the first craft beer factory as such in Catalonia was born in L’Hospitalet de Llobregat, in the Bellvitge neighborhood. Before that, there were brewpubs, meaning bars that brewed their own beer, but with little or no distribution outside their own four walls. That decade saw the start of the Catalan Craft movement. The 2008 crisis led to the birth of many breweries, and Gecan (Gremi d’Elaboradors de Cervesa Artesanal i Natural) was established, which currently has 45 beer producer members.

Barcelona became the spearhead of the Craft movement in Spain, and the BBF (Barcelona Beer Festival), which has become the most important beer festival in Southern Europe, contributed to this.
