The Amber category groups together amber to copper-colored beers in which caramel malt plays a leading role. It is a very broad family that spans traditions (American, Belgian, Irish, French) and shares a common denominator: the balance between malty sweetness, intense color, and a moderate bitterness that invites another glass.
In the glass, they show shades ranging from copper-red to dark amber, with a creamy, long-lasting head. The nose combines caramel, toasted biscuit, freshly baked bread, and, depending on the origin, fruity or citrus notes provided by the hops. On the palate, they are medium-bodied beers with a round mouthfeel, controlled sweetness, mild bitterness, and a clean finish. The typical alcohol content ranges between 4.5% and 6%.
They are brewed with a base of pale malt accompanied by crystal, Munich, or Vienna malts that provide color and caramel notes. The hops can be European (more herbal and floral) or American (citrusy and resinous), depending on the school the brewer follows.
They are very versatile beers at the table: they pair well with burgers, grilled meats, pizzas, stews, or semi-cured cheeses. They are served between 7°C and 10°C in a nonic or tulip glass. In this collection, you will find Amber Ales, Amber Lagers, and amber-colored beers from different traditions, all with that recognizable and very drinkable malty character.
