The APA, or American Pale Ale, is one of the great milestones of the American craft beer revolution. Born in the 80s at the hands of pioneering breweries like Sierra Nevada, it redefined the concept of Pale Ale by incorporating new American hops—full of citrus, pine, and tropical fruit—as the star of the show. It quickly became a benchmark style and a gateway to craft beer for millions of people.
In the glass, it displays a golden to light amber color, a creamy and persistent head, and, in many cases, a slight haze. On the nose, American hops dominate: grapefruit, orange, mango, pineapple, peach, resin, and herbal nuances. The malt provides a background of biscuit and soft caramel that supports the aroma without overpowering it. On the palate, it has a medium body with marked but not aggressive bitterness (30-45 IBU), lively carbonation, and a dry finish that invites another glass. The alcohol content ranges between 4.5% and 6.2%.
It is brewed with pale malts and a small proportion of caramel malts, American hops such as Cascade, Centennial, Amarillo, Simcoe, or Citra, and relatively neutral ale yeasts that let the hops shine.
It pairs perfectly with burgers, ribs, tacos, Tex-Mex food, pizza, aged cheeses, or spiced dishes. Serve between 7°C and 9°C in a pint glass or tulip glass. In this collection, you will find classic APAs and modern versions from breweries around the world that pay tribute to this foundational style.
