The Baltic Porter is a style born in the Baltic countries (Poland, Baltic states, Russia, Scandinavian countries) as a local evolution of the English Porters exported in the 19th century. The major difference is that, despite its name, it is usually fermented with lager yeast at low temperatures, which gives it a very characteristic cleanliness and elegance despite its high alcohol content.
In the glass, it displays a very dark brown color, almost black, with ruby highlights when held to the light and a creamy beige head. On the nose, it develops deep aromas of dark chocolate, coffee, licorice, dried fruit, prunes, molasses, and a slight touch of roast. On the palate, it is generous, with a medium to full body, well-integrated malty sweetness, mild bitterness (20-40 IBU), and a noticeable alcohol content that is nonetheless very rounded due to the lager fermentation. The usual alcohol content ranges from 6.5% to 9.5%.
It is brewed with Munich, chocolate, coffee, and special dark malts, discreet European hops, and, normally, lager yeast at a low temperature with prolonged cold maturation that polishes the entire profile.
It is an ideal beer to accompany stewed meats, game, blue cheeses, dark chocolate, brownies, or coffee-based desserts. It should be served between 9 °C and 12 °C in a tulip or snifter glass. Due to its alcohol content and complexity, it ages very well in the bottle for several years. A brewing gem with history, perfect for cold afternoons or long after-dinner conversations.
