The Black IPA, also known as Cascadian Dark Ale or India Black Ale, is one of the most fascinating styles in the craft beer movement. It combines two seemingly opposite worlds: the intense hop load of an American IPA and the dark color and roasted notes of a Porter. It was born on the U.S. northwest coast in the 90s and, although it remains a minority style, it has a very loyal fan base.
In the glass, it shows a very dark brown to black color with ruby highlights and a creamy, off-white head. On the nose, an unusual intersection occurs: grapefruit, mango, pine, and resin from the American hops coexist with notes of coffee, dark chocolate, and a light roast from the dark malt. Most surprisingly, the roasted malts are carefully chosen so as not to impart astringency. On the palate, it is medium-bodied, with marked bitterness (50-90 IBU), a dry finish, controlled sweetness, and moderate alcoholic warmth. It ranges between 6% and 9% ABV.
It is brewed with pale base malts, debittered dark malts (Carafa Special or similar) that provide color without aggressive bitterness, a significant load of American hops, and intense dry hopping.
It is a spectacular beer with grilled meats, glazed ribs, burgers, spicy Tex-Mex food, or dark chocolate. It is served between 8°C and 10°C in a tulip glass. If you like both IPAs and Stouts, this collection is your perfect meeting point between the two worlds.
