Brown Ale is a top-fermented, brown-colored beer with two major schools: the English, which is smoother and maltier, and the American, which is fuller-bodied and more hop-forward. It originated in England (especially in the north, with Newcastle as a benchmark) and was later reinterpreted in the U.S. during the craft beer movement of the 1980s.
In the glass, it displays a brown color with reddish or copper highlights, a creamy cream or beige-colored head, and generally good clarity. On the nose, it develops highly gastronomic notes of caramel, toffee, milk chocolate, nuts (walnut, hazelnut), raisins, plums, and a toasted bread background. American versions add citrus or resinous hop notes. On the palate, it has a medium body, well-balanced mild malty sweetness, moderate carbonation, pleasant bitterness (20-40 IBU depending on the school), and a finish reminiscent of chocolate and nuts. The alcohol content ranges between 4% and 6.2%.
It is brewed with pale, Munich, crystal, and chocolate malts, traditional English hops (Fuggle, Goldings) in the English version or American hops (Cascade, Centennial) in the American version, and neutral ale yeasts or those with light esters.
It is an extremely versatile beer at the table: it pairs with roasted meats, burgers, ribs, aged cheeses, stews, chocolate desserts, or apple pie. Serve between 8°C and 12°C in a pint glass or tulip glass. A perfect collection to discover comforting beers that are full-flavored yet easy to drink.
