Dunkelweizen

Dunkelweizen is the dark version of the classic Bavarian Hefeweizen: a top-fermented wheat beer that maintains all the aromatic character of weizen yeast but adds the depth of toasted malts. It is a traditional German style widely present in Bavaria, especially in historic pubs and breweries that serve it as a full-bodied alternative to its lighter version.

In the glass, it shows a light brown to copper-brown color, almost always hazy due to suspended yeast, with a white or cream-colored, fluffy, and very persistent head. On the nose, the classic weizen combo appears (ripe banana, clove, vanilla, flambéed banana) along with notes of toasted bread, caramel, mild chocolate, raisins, and nuts. On the palate, it has a medium to full body, very velvety thanks to the wheat, with a pleasant malty sweetness, lively carbonation, almost nonexistent bitterness (10-18 IBU), and a comforting finish. The alcohol content ranges between 4.8% and 5.6%.

It is brewed with a high percentage of wheat malt combined with Munich malts and mild toasted malts, discreet noble hops, and the unmistakable German weizen yeast that provides its characteristic esters and phenols.

It is a very versatile beer for the table: it pairs with German sausages, cured meats, ribs, roast chicken, semi-cured cheeses, or banana desserts. It is served between 7 °C and 9 °C in the classic tall weizen glass, which helps to display its spectacular foam. A perfect collection to discover a less known but equally gastronomic version of Bavarian wheat beers.
