The Golden Ale is a top-fermented blonde beer that is light, refreshing, and very accessible, popularized in England in the mid-80s as a modern alternative to traditional Bitters. It sought to capture consumers who leaned towards commercial lagers by offering an easy-drinking beer, yet one with more character, aroma, and body than a standard industrial lager.
In the glass, it displays a clean, brilliant golden color, a creamy white head, and good clarity. On the nose, it develops soft notes of cereal, bread, fresh grass, light honey, and a floral or citrus background provided by the hops (traditionally English, nowadays often American or New Zealander). The fermentation leaves very subtle esters. On the palate, it has a medium-light body, with minimal sweetness, lively carbonation, a present but gentle bitterness (20-35 IBU), and a dry, clean finish. The alcohol content ranges between 4% and 5.3%, making it very sessionable.
It is brewed with light pale ale malts, occasionally with a touch of wheat malt, hops such as East Kent Goldings, Cascade, or Citra depending on the style, and relatively neutral ale yeasts that let the hops and malt shine.
It is an ideal beer for appetizers, picnics, terraces, light meals, fish and chips, roast chicken, salads, pizzas, or mild cheeses. It is served between 6 °C and 9 °C in a pint glass or tulip glass. One of the most comfortable options for a first beer of the evening, or to accompany daytime moments without giving up flavor but without being overpowering.
