Hard Seltzer

Hard Seltzer is a fermented alcoholic beverage that is technically not beer, but has become popular within the brewing ecosystem due to how it is marketed and the number of breweries that produce it. It is a very low-calorie, low-carbohydrate drink that is transparent, with fine bubbles and flavored with fruits, herbs, or spices. Its explosive success in the U.S. and Europe is a response to a growing demand for light, aromatic beverages.

In the glass, it appears transparent or slightly tinted by the fruit, with fine, abundant bubbles similar to those of sparkling water or cava. The foam is practically nonexistent. The nose is dominated by the chosen fruity or aromatic scents: lemon, red berries, mandarin, mango, mint, cucumber, ginger, watermelon, and an endless number of combinations. On the palate, it is very light, with almost no body, minimal sweetness, no bitterness, high carbonation, and an extremely dry and refreshing finish. The alcohol content is usually between 4% and 6%, with very few calories.

It is made by fermenting sugar or sugar water (in some cases, neutral malt) with specific yeasts that provide a very clean profile, without malt or cereal flavors, and is subsequently flavored with natural extracts, juices, or essences.

It is a drink designed for hot days, pools, picnics, after-work drinks, long events, or as a light alternative to a cocktail. It is served very cold, between 3 °C and 6 °C, in a highball glass or a flute. An interesting option for changing up the ritual or for those looking for drinks with fewer calories and plenty of aroma.
