The Oatmeal Stout is a classic variant of the Stout style in which a significant proportion of oats is added to the grain bill. This simple addition completely transforms the beer's texture, providing unparalleled creaminess and smoothness. It originated in England in the late 19th century and, after decades of near-oblivion, was revived by modern craft breweries that championed its silky and comforting character.
In the glass, it displays a very dark brown to black color with ruby highlights, a creamy off-white head, and good retention. On the nose, it develops elegant notes of roasted coffee, dark chocolate, cocoa, nuts, toasted malt, and a creamy, almost milky background contributed by the oats. On the palate, it stands out for its characteristic velvety and creamy texture, with a medium to full body, soft malty sweetness, moderate roasted bitterness (25-40 IBU), low to moderate carbonation, and a long, creamy, and comforting finish. The alcohol content ranges between 4.5% and 6.5%.
It is brewed with pale base malts, chocolate malts, roasted barley, a significant proportion of flaked or malted oats (between 5% and 15%), traditional English hops in measured doses, and neutral or slightly fruity ale yeasts.
It is an extraordinarily comforting beer, ideal for cold months. It pairs with spoon dishes, stews, ribs, burgers, dark chocolate, nut-based desserts, or blue cheeses. Serve between 8°C and 12°C in a nonic pint or tulip glass. An essential collection to discover how an ingredient as humble as oats can radically transform the texture and elegance of a dark beer.
