Belgian Strong

Belgian Strong ales are powerful beers from the Belgian tradition that encompass both pale versions (Strong Golden Ale) and dark versions (Strong Dark Ale). They share a high alcohol content (between 7% and 11%), great aromatic complexity, and a surprising balance between alcohol, sweetness, and bitterness that makes them excellent sipping beers.

In the glass, the pale versions show a brilliant gold with abundant white foam, while the dark ones display copper, brown, or mahogany tones with a cream-colored head. On the nose, they unfold a vast palette: white fruits, banana, spices, pepper, honey, and a cereal background in the pale ones; prune, fig, date, caramel, chocolate, and oxidative notes in the dark ones. On the palate, they are medium to full-bodied beers with a lively effervescence that lightens the mouthfeel, controlled sweetness, mild to moderate bitterness, and a warm but well-integrated alcohol.

They are brewed with Pilsner or Munich malts depending on the style, candy sugar to reach the desired alcohol level without increasing body, subtle European hops, and, above all, highly expressive Belgian yeasts. They are usually bottle-conditioned, which gives them a fine effervescence and the ability to age for years.

These are beers for long after-dinner conversations, nightcaps, or pairings with blue cheese, foie gras, game, chocolate-based desserts, or spiced dishes. They should be served between 8°C and 12°C in a goblet or tulip glass to concentrate the aromas. An essential collection for discovering the pinnacle of the Belgian brewing tradition.
