Helles, short for Münchner Helles, is Munich's signature beer and one of the great icons of the German lager tradition. It was born at the end of the 19th century as a Bavarian response to the growing popularity of Czech Pilsners, offering a maltier and less bitter alternative. Today, it is the benchmark beer in the historic breweries and beer gardens of the Bavarian capital.
In the glass, it displays a clean, brilliant golden yellow color with a creamy white head and good retention. On the nose, aromas of sweet cereal, fresh bread, sourdough, mild honey, and a very subtle herbal or floral background from the noble German hops dominate. The lager fermentation leaves a very clean profile, free of fruity esters. On the palate, it is medium-bodied with an elegant malty sweetness, moderate carbonation, low bitterness (16-22 IBU), and a crisp, clean finish that invites another glass. The alcohol content remains between 4.7% and 5.4%, making it highly sessionable.
It is brewed with Pilsner malt as the absolute protagonist, German noble hops (Hallertau, Tettnang, Spalt) in very restrained doses, soft water, and Bavarian lager yeast, with a long cold maturation that polishes the entire profile.
It is the perfect beer to accompany traditional German cuisine: white sausages, pork knuckle, pretzels, potato salad, schnitzel, or mild cheeses. It is also excellent as an aperitif, on a terrace, or as an accompaniment to long meals without being overwhelming. It is served between 6 °C and 9 °C in a pint glass, krug, or pokal. An essential collection for understanding the elegance of the Bavarian lager tradition beyond industrial standards.
